20th Anniversary Celebrations in Living North East

Guests partied the night away at a 1920s themed ball at The Morritt in July to celebrate the owners’ 20th anniversary at the hotel.

Some wonderful photographs appeared in the social pages of several newspapers and magazines, showing off the guests and their amazing fancy dress, including the full page spread below from Living North East’s September issue.

The Spirit of Teesdale is Revealed

To celebrate their 20th anniversary at The Morritt Country House Hotel in July 2014, owners Barbara Johnson and Peter Phillips commissioned local artist, Ewan Allinson, to create a sculpture in the hotel gardens.

Ewan was chosen from a shortlist of local artists who entered a contest to create an artwork that captured the essence of one of Country Durham’s most picturesque dales. Winning the commission was also a celebration for Ewan himself as he celebrated his 20-year anniversary as a sculptor and was thrilled to win the commission.

The sculpture is closely linked to the history of Greta Bridge, Teesdale and The Morritt. It incorporates a dry-stone wall grove with seating and a shrine to a Roman water nymph, Neine, in the middle. A relief on one side depicts Neine and on the other there is an inscription. The grove is built out of stone from Upper Teesdale and the shrine is carved from stone from Dunhouse Quarry near Staindrop.

For more detailed information about Ewan’s inspiration and the thought that went into the sculpture, there is an in-depth article on The Morritt website.

Today is our 20th Anniversary at The Morritt

Thank you for making the last 20 years so special

Today is the 20th anniversary of our stewardship of The Morritt Country House Hotel. When we took over the hotel on July 18th 1994, we knew we had an exciting journey ahead of us but we didn’t appreciate just how far we would come in 20 years.

The past two decades raced by, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to the many customers and loyal staff who shared this journey with us.

Nine years ago, we put the hotel on the market and lined up a buyer. But when we started to show the potential new owner around, and talk about all the things that we could do to enhance The Morritt, we were so excited we wanted to do it all ourselves. So we decided to stay and have enjoyed watching our ideas come to life ever since. It was one of the best decisions we ever made!

We’re proud to remain a family-run hotel with a passion for excellence in everything we do. Throughout our 20 years at this historic coaching inn we’ve seen a great deal of extraordinary change and investment. Personal highlights include:

We built an enviable position as one of the area’s leading venues for weddings and functions. In the past 20 years we have hosted more than 1,000 weddings.

We opened our unique Garage Spa in 2013, with the UK’s only outdoor Shepherd’s Hut sauna and a range of relaxing treatments – with more innovations coming this year.

Gilroy’s Dining Room a la carte restaurant was awarded 2AA Rosettes in 2013 and has developed a reputation for great food using local produce.

The Garden Room extension was built next to the grand ballroom in 2007 and is a beautiful venue for weddings.

To celebrate the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth we commissioned local artist Stuart Short to paint a set of murals in the Dickens Bistro to complement John Gilroy’s murals that were completed in 1946.

We individually designed all our guest bedrooms to high standards.

Once again, thank you for making the past 20 years so special. We’re already looking ahead to the next 20!

Young Musicians Inspired by The Dickens Bar

Young musicians from the Music at the Heart of Teesdale (M@HoT) project visited The Morritt Country House Hotel a few weeks ago to research their own piece of music. The young musicians had a whistle-stop tour of Teesdale to experience the sights and sound of the landscape and seek inspiration for their new composition.

As well as visiting The Bowes Museum, Abbey Bridge, Eggleston Abbey, and Meeting of the Waters, the musicians called at The Morritt where they were treated to a lively explanation of the famous Gilroy murals in the Dickens Bar by hotel owner, Peter Philips.

The Dickens Bar at The Morritt – named after author Charles Dickens who visited Greta Bridge in 1838 to gather background information on the Yorkshire schools for “Nicholas Nickleby” – has the only hand painted wall mural in the world painted in 1946 by Gilroy, the famous Northumbrian artist best known for Guinness advertising posters. The murals cover all four walls of the bar and depict a Dickensian scene of life in the 17th century with humour and history. The faces of the people in the mural are allegedly local characters!

The new piece of music will premiere at The Witham on Friday, November 28th at a special concert and we hope to have the young musicians back at The Morritt later this year to play at our Beer Festival in November.
