Today is our 20th Anniversary at The Morritt

Thank you for making the last 20 years so special

Today is the 20th anniversary of our stewardship of The Morritt Country House Hotel. When we took over the hotel on July 18th 1994, we knew we had an exciting journey ahead of us but we didn’t appreciate just how far we would come in 20 years.

The past two decades raced by, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to the many customers and loyal staff who shared this journey with us.

Nine years ago, we put the hotel on the market and lined up a buyer. But when we started to show the potential new owner around, and talk about all the things that we could do to enhance The Morritt, we were so excited we wanted to do it all ourselves. So we decided to stay and have enjoyed watching our ideas come to life ever since. It was one of the best decisions we ever made!

We’re proud to remain a family-run hotel with a passion for excellence in everything we do. Throughout our 20 years at this historic coaching inn we’ve seen a great deal of extraordinary change and investment. Personal highlights include:

We built an enviable position as one of the area’s leading venues for weddings and functions. In the past 20 years we have hosted more than 1,000 weddings.

We opened our unique Garage Spa in 2013, with the UK’s only outdoor Shepherd’s Hut sauna and a range of relaxing treatments – with more innovations coming this year.

Gilroy’s Dining Room a la carte restaurant was awarded 2AA Rosettes in 2013 and has developed a reputation for great food using local produce.

The Garden Room extension was built next to the grand ballroom in 2007 and is a beautiful venue for weddings.

To celebrate the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth we commissioned local artist Stuart Short to paint a set of murals in the Dickens Bistro to complement John Gilroy’s murals that were completed in 1946.

We individually designed all our guest bedrooms to high standards.

Once again, thank you for making the past 20 years so special. We’re already looking ahead to the next 20!

Young Musicians Inspired by The Dickens Bar

Young musicians from the Music at the Heart of Teesdale (M@HoT) project visited The Morritt Country House Hotel a few weeks ago to research their own piece of music. The young musicians had a whistle-stop tour of Teesdale to experience the sights and sound of the landscape and seek inspiration for their new composition.

As well as visiting The Bowes Museum, Abbey Bridge, Eggleston Abbey, and Meeting of the Waters, the musicians called at The Morritt where they were treated to a lively explanation of the famous Gilroy murals in the Dickens Bar by hotel owner, Peter Philips.

The Dickens Bar at The Morritt – named after author Charles Dickens who visited Greta Bridge in 1838 to gather background information on the Yorkshire schools for “Nicholas Nickleby” – has the only hand painted wall mural in the world painted in 1946 by Gilroy, the famous Northumbrian artist best known for Guinness advertising posters. The murals cover all four walls of the bar and depict a Dickensian scene of life in the 17th century with humour and history. The faces of the people in the mural are allegedly local characters!

The new piece of music will premiere at The Witham on Friday, November 28th at a special concert and we hope to have the young musicians back at The Morritt later this year to play at our Beer Festival in November.

Durham Brass Festival July 11th to 20th

If you’re a music lover and visiting The Morritt Country House Hotel between July 11th and 20th this year, you might want to check out Durham Brass Festival.

There’s a huge number of events taking place throughout Durham and the programme includes innovative new commissions, a great line-up of live music and fantastic free family events.

Three spectacular world premieres are planned – British Sea Power’s “Sea of Brass”Steamsong by John Kefala Kerr, and Fractal Sparks which features stunning visual effects and accompanying music from Jo Hamilton, one of the UK’s most original musical talents.

If you’ve touring the region you may come across a festival favourite, Streets of BRASS, a fantastic and free family event that sees the best UK and international bands bringing a party atmosphere to the streets of Durham City.

The Morritt Country House Hotel is a great place to base yourself for the festival as we have great links to the A66 and A1 so most of the venues are just a short drive away.

Independents’ Day 2014

Today is Independents’ Day – a national campaign that promotes and celebrates independent businesses across the UK.

Held annually on 4 July, Independents’ Day has quickly become the voice of independent retailers to reach the local community, giving them a chance to be heard and get on people’s radars.

There are lots of ways to capitalise on Independents’ Day and drive customers to your business – for more details, visit www.indieday.co.uk or follow Independents’ Day on Facebook and Twitter.

Last year, thousands of businesses in over 150 locations across the UK got involved in Independents’ Day, with celebrity support from the likes of Theo Paphitis and Government backing from Skills Minister, Matthew Hancock, and Shadow Business Secretary, Chuka Umunna.

We’re proud to be part of Independents’ Day this year.

Independents’ Day is run by People 1st. The campaign was launched for the first time in 2011 and previously run by the National Skills Academy for Retail.

They say your eyes are the windows to your soul…Make sure the windows to your soul are bright and wide with the new CACI Eye Lift, now available at The Garage Spa.

Our CACI Eye Lift treatment opens your eye area, diminishes dark circles, and tones and reduces lines. Your muscles are lifted to treat sagging eyelids, opening up your eyes and making them appear brighter.

We’re delighted to add the CACI Eye Lift to our growing list of CACI treatments at The Garage Spa, which now include:

Peter Cycles for Charity and Mülheim

Peter Philips, co-owner of The Morritt Country House Hotel & The Garage Spa, is a keen “occasional” cyclist and supporter of several local charities.

Hull to Darlington

As part of his involvement with Darlington Town Twinning & International Association, Peter recently accompanied cyclists from the twinned-town of Mülheim on a cycle ride from York to Darlington as the last leg of their journey.

Nine cyclists left Mülheim on Wednesday for Rotterdam and then on the overnight ferry to Hull where members of the Association met and guided them to York.

On Friday, after staying overnight, they were joined in York by more Association members, including Peter, who accompanied them to Darlington. After spending three days in and around the town, they cycled to North Shields, for the overnight ferry to Amsterdam, and then on home to Mülheim the next day.

Morecambe to Bridlington

Peter’s next charity cycling adventure was with the Rotary Club, when he cycled from Morecambe to Bridlington. The trip started with some excitement when Peter’s group of Rotary cyclists were travelling by coach at 7.30am on Friday to start the ride at Morecambe. Just a mile from the Morritt, near the A66 Motel, the coach broke down and a replacement was to be there in an hour.

Seeing a staff member at the A66 Motel, they asked if the 13 cyclists could get some coffee. Unfortunately the motel didn’t open until 9am so Peter spoke to The Morritt and arranged four staff cars to collect them and their luggage and return to The Morritt for coffee and biscuits.

The riders were happy, refreshed and impressed with the service. The replacement coach arrived and they were back on their way. Going that extra mile provided great customer satisfaction to an important group of customers. We’re looking forward to welcoming them back again soon!

The ride was good fun and a great success raising £4,000 for local Rotary charities

London to Paris!

But that’s not enough for Peter. For next year’s charity run, Rotary are looking at the “Help the Heros, Arch to Arc” ride. He’ll cycle from Marble Arch in London, all the way to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. More about that when it happens.

Good luck Peter in all your cycling adventures!

An Outdoor Theatre Break with The Castle Players and The Morritt

We’re really pleased to support Teesdale’s famous theatre group, The Castle Players, this summer by advertising our fabulous afternoon teas and Dessert Club in their show programme.

The Players will perform William Shakespeare’s classic play, Romeo & Juliet, outdoors in the grounds of The Bowes Museum between July 8th and 12th. There are still some tickets available for performances earlier in the week, available to buy online from The Castle Players.

The non-professional theatre group has a fantastic reputation for large-scale outdoor shows and this year is no different. Set in a southern seaside resort – not unlike Brighton – the Capulet “Mods” and the Montague “Rockers” are always at each others’ throats. And when the Mod Juliet meets the Rocker Romeo, sparks fly and true love blossoms…with dramatic consequences.

Why not combine a trip to the theatre with an overnight stay at The Morritt Country House Hotel & The Garage Spa? Relax in the luxurious Garage Spa during the afternoon before heading to the play, and then spend the night in one of our individually designed guest rooms.  We can even prepare a picnic for you to take to the show for you to enjoy in the museum gardens during the extended interval.

To book any of these offers or for more information, call 01833 627 232 or email relax@themorritt.co.uk.

Please note, tickets for The Castle Players must be booked directly with the theatre group.
